For this LD, I made a Half-Life 2 level that could take place as a detour during the “Water Hazard” level. This level is one of the few which is criticized for poor pacing, as it requires stopping and solving puzzles between using a quick boat, repeatedly. Splitting this sequence up with a more substantial shooting section would help mitigate that, I feel.
I went with a sunset/industrial vibe for this level. Sunsets are unequivocally calm, which brings an unusual atmosphere to a shooting game. My plan was to highlight the contrast between a quiet, serene sunset, then bursts of shooting gameplay and action, and then quiet again after the enemies are dead. I think building the level’s atmosphere around that will provide a unique and interesting feeling, and would be an awesome level design challenge!
